Mr. Marcus Pettersson, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Gothenburg, Sweden, visited the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and Sweden on 17th January 2025.
Sri Lanka currently exports a range of products to Sweden, including apparel, rubber goods, tea, and coconut kernel products. In 2024, the total value of Sri Lanka's merchandise exports to Sweden amounted to USD 101 million.
During the meeting, Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of EDB, outlined Sri Lanka’s trade and export policy emphasizing the country’s strategic plan to boost exports through product diversification and market expansion in the next 5 years.
Mr. Wijesinghe highlighted Sri Lanka’s potential to further penetrate the Swedish market, particularly in key sectors such as apparel and textiles, rubber, tea, fruits, spices and concentrates, coconut kernel-based products, processed food and beverages including health-oriented organic and natural products eco-friendly handicrafts, and ICT-BPM services.
He requested the collaboration of the Honorary Consul to implement strategies to enhance Sri Lanka’s market share in the identified product and service sectors in Sweden.
Mr. Pettersson acknowledged Sri Lanka’s export potential in Sweden, particularly in the ICT sector, spices, processed foods, and organic products. He assured his full commitment to working with the EDB to enhance Sri Lanka’s market share in Sweden and the wider Nordic region.
Expressing his appreciation for the Sri Lankan government’s progressive policies, Mr. Pettersson lauded initiatives such as the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ concept, which aligns with global sustainability trends.
The discussions reinforced the importance of strengthening trade ties between Sri Lanka and Sweden, paving the way for enhanced economic cooperation in the years ahead.
