Five leading Sri Lankan brands ApiHappi, House of Lonali, Leap by Mihiri Devendra, Sonali Dharmawardena, and Selyn have successfully completed the initial stage of the Creative Sri Lanka 2030 international knowledge-sharing program. The brands were awarded completion certificates under the education arm of the Matchmaking Program, delivered by The Institute of Future Creations (TIFC) and the University of the Arts London (UAL), ranked #2 globally for art and design in the QS World University Rankings. This milestone is a key step in aligning Sri Lanka’s craft and design sector with international market standards.
The certificate award ceremony took place recently at the Export Development Board (EDB) with the presence of Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman/CEO, EDB, and Mr. Orlando Edwards, Country Director, British Council. The British Council provided invaluable support for the program.
"It’s a pleasure to support educational initiatives that empower Sri Lankan creatives to lead on the global stage," said Mr. Orlando Edwards. "This reflects our long-term commitment to fostering creative industries and ensuring Sri Lankan talent meets global market demands. Sri Lanka has immense potential to develop this sector in collaboration with the tourism industry, benefiting both sectors."
As part of the broader EU Matchmaking Program, the initiative aims to connect Sri Lanka’s rich craft heritage with the global market. Through strategic partnerships with the European Union, UAL, and TIFC, it equips Sri Lankan brands with tools, knowledge, and networks to scale up internationally and promote ethical trade practices.
"Education is a cornerstone of development, and we are honoured to have UAL guiding this initiative," said Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe. "Partnerships like this, supported by TIFC and the British Council, are critical in equipping Sri Lankan creatives for global success. This initiative is about more than market access it ensures Sri Lankan craftsmanship is valued and sustained for future generations. We are committed to fostering a creative economy that empowers our artisans and strengthens Sri Lanka’s global position in craft and design."
At the same event, the Chamber of Ethical Lifestyle Enterprises (CELE) was officially launched, marking a milestone in the sector’s organization. The acting Executive Committee, officiated by Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, includes President Mr. Etosha Lankatilleke, Vice President Ms. Lonali Rodrigo, and Secretary Ms. Aparna Samarakoon.
CELE will assess Sri Lankan craft makers' readiness for international markets while ensuring alignment with ethical and sustainability standards. The committee will soon host its first meeting with its existing 22 members to define the official vision and strategic roadmap under the Creative Sri Lanka 2030 initiative. Furthermore, the committee will take the necessary steps to expand the membership of the CELE, with the aim of fostering a united and collaborative effort to promote and elevate Sri Lankan crafts on the global stage. This collective approach will help showcase the unique talents and craftsmanship of Sri Lanka to the world.
CELE will be supported by international advisors Ms. Hannah Middleton and Mr. Robert Meeder, both fellows of the Royal Society of the Arts and global creative industry professionals.
"This marks a key step in professionalizing the sector, and we look forward to working with CELE to create a model for sustainable and ethical craft production that sets a global benchmark," said Ms. Hannah Middleton.
Mr. Robert Meeder added, "The work being done through Creative Sri Lanka 2030 and CELE is setting a precedent for how traditional crafts and modern design can coexist and thrive in the global market. We are excited to see the sector evolve and grow."
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board, as the apex government agency dedicated to promoting exports from Sri Lanka, will play a pivotal role in fostering the growth of this sector. By driving strategic initiatives and supporting key industries, the Board will be instrumental in achieving the country's ambitious export targets and enhancing its global trade presence.
