Ushering international recognition for Sri Lanka’s conformity realm, the first ever Asia Pacific accreditation confab took off in Colombo on 15 June -and the country has accepted 14 international standards in 2012/’13. “Under the purview of my Ministry, we have taken various measures to promote accreditations in Sri Lanka. This is done with a view to enhance living standards and even our exports. Sri Lanka also issued 145 new ISO certificates and 14 international standards” said Rishad Bathiudeen (Minister of Industry and Commerce of Sri Lanka) on 15 June in Colombo.

The EDB is to organize Sri Lanka pavilion at the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) Trade Fair to be held from 21st - 23rd June at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand Johannesburg, South Africa.
There will be 06 companies exhibiting the Sri Lankan Products in an area of 54m2 in this event. The Sri Lanka pavilion will be housed in the Hall 3.

In a post-quota era, where competition with mass garment manufacturers is destructive to the workforce as well as to the industry, Sri Lankan garment manufacturers have reinvented themselves as environment friendly, ethical employers of labour.
With the ending of the global quota system in apparels in the year 2005, Sri Lankan garment manufactures were faced with two extreme options. As ICT exports are projected to top $1Bn this year, Sri Lanka has launched the latest ICT Value Survey to find the national hi-tech exports it achieved in 2013/14-and all the ICT exporters are encouraged to actively take part in it.

Sri Lanka’s coloured stone industry which is the fourth largest export earner in the island should export more value addition gems to contribute better to the country’s’ export earnings , a senior official at Export Development Board (EDB) said.
“We are doing our best to achieve the highest value added gem market,” Bandula Egodage, chariman and chief executive of Sri Lanka Export Development Board said.

Sri Lanka’s apparel industry is well on its path to meet the apparel export target of US $8.5 billion by 2020. Apparel exports which bring the largest export income to the country have recorded an increase of 9.26% YoY by earning US $4.9 billion in the year of 2014. In 2013, earnings from apparel rose by 13% YoY, recording a $4.5 billion surpassing the US $4 billion target initially set by the apparel industry.

Sri Lanka is the largest producer of Pure Cinnamon in the world accounting for 70% of the global production. The Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zelanicum) referred to as “sweet cinnamon” and “true cinnamon” is considered superior to the variety known as Cassia in the global market.
Since Sri Lanka is the birthplace of true cinnamon, all the customs, traditions, culture and technology associated with cinnamon are well integrated as a heritage to the socio economy of our nation.

The recovery of export streams and markets damaged through neglect and weak international relations is a major priority in Sri Lanka’s ‘100-day Global Trade Blueprint’, which was unveiled for the first time in Colombo.
The new Government also revealed that Sri Lanka’s exports as a share of GDP, is not at a low of 15% as generally believed but is at 20%.

The past three years from 2012-2014 saw a renaissance in Ceylon Tea with the year 2013 breaking all records and the 2014 figures just released surpassing even that of 2013, recording the highest ever export earnings of $ 1.61 billion (Rs. 210.2 billion) which is a 5.43 % growth over 2013 and a FOB price of US$ 4.95 per kg, which is a 3.1 % growth over 2013 which were all records for the 147 year old history of the Sri Lankan tea industry.
