Black pepper is produced from the berries of the plant Piper nigrum, which is native to the South Asian region. Ceylon Pepper is rich in piperine, an alkaloid that gives it its distinct pungency. In Sri Lanka, pepper is mostly grown in the central province of the country with a cool climate and high rainfall.
