The Automotive Battery Market was valued at USD 43 billion in 2020, and is expected to reach USD 59 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period (2021 - 2026). Several factors which include technology and adoption of electric / Hybrid vehicles on a greater scale are observed to accelerate the global demand for batteries. Further, the use of storage elements in the domestic electricity supply, at localised level is also observing secondary use and enhanced life cycles of automotive batteries. These factors together have shown tremendous growth even in the local market for automotive Batteries.
Currently Sri Lanka exports a wide range of automobile batteries equipped with the latest technology coupled with customised product procurement. Long-standing manufacturers in Sri Lanka have taken advantage of their expertise and their associations with known global brands to enhance their production capabilities in order to reach overseas markets over the last few decades. Locally inspired application research in the battery technologies have seen the technical knowledge base in Sri Lanka grow considerably. Hence Sri Lanka is poised to take advantage of this sector with major inroads to R&D and manufacturing. The industry is set to support the complete product life cycle for automotive batteries in the next wave of demand.
Most Sri Lankan manufacturers collaborate with R&D and technology agencies based in Sri Lanka and overseas to boost improvements and innovations. The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC), the first public-private research institute in Sri Lanka and a pioneer in Nano and advanced technology research in the country, and in collaboration with Associated Battery Manufacturers’ (ABM), Exide Battery introduced world’s first Graphene-based Lead-acid battery to the market. By means of mixed composites of Reduced Graphene Oxide and Expanded Graphite at an optimised ratio has enabled enhanced charge acceptance of lead acid batteries while reducing sulfation in negative plates. This battery to which further modifications are already being applied, have shown significant life cycle improvement as compared to the ordinary automobile batteries in the market.
Sri Lankan Electrical and Electronics industry is in a constant state of research and development in order to provide the best quality products suiting the standards of the global market. The wide variety of products and exporters cover every aspect of the industry
