Agriculture is the most common vocation of the Sri Lankans, and about eighty (80) different varieties of fruits and vegetables are grown in Sri Lanka's varied agro-climatic areas. Fruit & vegetables are mainly grown by the semi commercialized small farmers and the annual production is more than 800,000 metric tons. Sri Lanka exports both fresh and processed Fruits & Vegetables varieties to many destinations in the world 90 per cent of the fresh products are destined to the Middle East market and the Maldives Island. Majority of the Processed products are exported to the European market.
Sri Lanka is being adjusted well to the stringent quarterly standards and Health and safety regulations stipulated by the European Community. Tropical produce with Sri Lankan origin such as Pineapple, Rambutan, Mangosteen, Passion Fruits etc. are very popular among the nations in the world due to their unique characteristics such as flavour, smell, colour and taste.
